Paula Jones, age 70, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Friday, August 22, 2014, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton after her year and a half battle with cancer.
A memorial service will be 10:30 AM on Monday, August 25, 2014, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton. Burial of the urn will take place in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Yankton. A gathering of friends and family will be from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Sunday, August 24, 2014 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:00 PM.
Urn bearers will be Paula's grandchildren.
Paula was born August 20, 1944 to Paul and Gertrude (Brennan) Nelson in Yankton, South Dakota. She grew up in Mission Hill, South Dakota, attended country school in the Mission Hill area and graduated from Yankton High School in 1962. After high school she began working at the Yankton County Treasurer Office for a few years. She married Wesley Novotny Jr. in 1964 and moved to Kansas. She later moved to Missouri and then back to Mission Hill in 1974. She married Chris Gunderson in 1974 and in 1981 began working for Yankton College as the secretary for the President of the college. She moved to Yankton in 1982 and continued to work at the college until it closed in 1984. She then began working for the Yankton County Equalization Office, which she continued for 12 years. She married Larry Jones on July 2, 1994 in Yankton. Paula began working in the Yankton County Auditor's Office until her health forced her to retire in 2013.
Paula enjoyed music, crafts, reading, painting, children, animals, roses, decorating her yard for the holidays, but she especially loved her children and grandchildren. She was very devoted to her work and her family.
Survivors include her husband, Larry Jones of Yankton; six children: Donald (Dana) Novotny of Denver, Colorado; Denise Novotny of Phoenix, Arizona; David (Erin) Novotny of Denver; Daniel (Kay) Novotny of Phoenix; Brandy (Brian) Salts of Yankton; and Corey (Jen Gratzfeld) Gunderson of Yankton; eleven grandchildren: Jamie, Brian, Catherine, Nathan, Emily, Allison, Alexandra, Oliver, Madison, Davian, and Tori; and two puppies: Ruby and Rosie.
She was preceded in death by her parents and Brother, Charles Nelson.
