Warren Burdette Johnson, 85, of Yankton, SD; passed away on May 5, 2016, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

A memorial lunch will be held to honor his memory at 11:00 AM, on Monday, May 9, 2016, at the VFW Hall in Yankton, SD.  To honor Warren's military service and commitment to veterans, his remains will be interred at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Yankton.

Warren was born at home in Vermillion, SD; on May 31, 1930, to Harold T. and Ina Johnson.  He attended grade and high school in Vermillion, graduating in 1948.  He was active in football, baseball, and choir, and was selected for Boys State.  He enlisted in the Naval Reserve after high school and was stationed for a short time in California.  Upon his return, he met and eventually married Constance June Robbennolt on August 4, 1951.  To this union, 8 children were born.  In 1952, Warren was called up from the reserves and was stationed in Guam awaiting deployment to the Korean conflict, but his unit never received their orders to Korea.  On August 13, 1977, Warren was united in marriage with Patricia Tillson in Sioux Falls, SD.  They remained together for the rest of his days.

Warren worked as a carpenter for many years, but was also active in many types of home and commercial construction. He was especially proud of the "Birdhouse" that he and his father built in Vermillion, SD.  He moved the family to Huron, SD in 1967, where he worked for Pugsley Construction.  He moved to Sioux Falls and worked for Ronney Construction, as well as working a few years for the City of Sioux Falls.  He and Patty moved to Chester, SD; upon his retirement.

Warren was actively involved with the American Legion for 31 years, even serving as District Commander.  He was an active member of 40 & 8, Locale #129 for 27 years, where he was involved in many levels of leadership.  He served as Sous Chef de Chemin de Fer Passe and has also been named Veteran of the Year.

Warren is survived by his wife Pat, of Yankton; 8 children:  Alan Johnson of Colorado Springs, CO; Shelley Anker of Lynnwood, WA; Timothy Johnson of Nez Perce, ID; Larry (Sandy) Johnson of Medford, OR; Jody Kemp of Vallejo, CA; Tracey Baker (Doug) of Ferndale, WA; Lisa Anderson of Klamath Falls, OR; and Vikki Young-King (Rod) of Everett, WA; 5 step-children; Cathy Wagoner of Yankton, SD; Bill Tillson of Chester, SD; Mary Palmer of Medford, OR; Junior Tillson of Sioux Falls, SD; and Regina (Daren) Fujitani of Madison, SD; 35 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; sister, Janette Hackney; sister in law, Marjorie Johnson; and many nieces and nephews.

Warren was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Ina Johnson, brother Russell, and twin daughters Rebecca and Roberta. 

In lieu of flowers memorial may be directed to the family.

In the twilight of his years I met Warren and played many a whist game with him. A terrific guy I will miss.
