Joan Ann Hegge, age 83 of Crofton, Nebraska died on Friday, July 10, 2015 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, July 13, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Crofton with the Rev. Michael Schmitz officiating. Burial will be at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Crofton. Visitation will be on Sunday, at church, from 5-8:00 p.m. with a vigil service at 8:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday morning one hour prior to services at church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters and great grandchildren.
Joan Ann Hegge was born on January 7, 1932 in Crofton, Nebraska to Henry F. and Rose Ann (Gohman) Wortmann. She grew up in Crofton and attended St. Rose School and graduated from Crofton High School. She married Elmer John Hegge on May 15, 1951 in Crofton, NE. They originally lived on the home place and then moved to a farm southwest of Crofton. In 1969 they started their Grade A dairy operation and continued that until 1990. Joan also worked at Sunshine Grocery in Yankton making wedding cakes and worked at Gurney Seed & Nursery. Joan moved into Crofton in 1995.
Joan was a member of St. Rose of Lima and its guild, Christian Mothers, Cursillo, had a Eucharistic hour and was an EME. She sang in the choir and decorated church with her flowers for many years. She made quilts, rosaries, jelly and salsa. Joan was an excellent seamstress. Her family was the love of her life and she was a devoted mother and grandmother to all.
Joan is survived by seven daughters and spouses Patty and Mike McCabe of Bennington, Debbie and Ron Weinrich of Aberdeen, SD, Vicki and Brian Woockman of Hartington, Mary Ann and Loren Wortmann of Hartington, Sylvia and Bob Lauer of Hartington, Jane and Jeff Mueller of Yankton, SD, Susie and Kevin Wittmeier of Chester Springs, PA; one son John and wife Joni Hegge of Lyons; 27 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; three sisters and spouses Lucille and Dick Rye of Sioux Falls, SD, DelRae and Tony Schieffer of Columbus, Judy and Pat Murphy of Sioux Falls, SD; three brothers and spouses Jim and Mary Ann Wortmann of Crofton, Dick and Nancy Wortmann of Crofton, Bob and Barb Wortmann of Shubert, NE.
She was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Rose Wortmann; husband Elmer on April 6, 1994 at the age of 64 years; brother Jerry Wortmann; and granddaughter Michelle Wortmann.

So sorry to hear of Joans passing. Elmer and Joan were to very special people to me and they will truly be missed.
I was surprised at your mother's passing. I would stop by and see her from time to time and enjoyed the garden tour Joan had a green thumb. My visit would bring back many memories of our time in High School. I will keep Joan and the family in my prayers and thoughts.
