Layne Christopher Hauger was born March 17, 2000, in Yankton, South Dakota to Chris and Jenni (Schwarz) Hauger.  He grew up on the farm in rural Yankton and attended Lincoln Elementary School, Yankton Middle School and was a freshman at Yankton High School.

Layne was always very active in 4-H, raising his calf Herbie, playing football, wrestling, riding motorcycles, and helping on the farm. He loved working with his uncle Danny and his dad. He was a very hard worker and was always willing to go the extra mile for anyone including mowing at Lakeport Church and planting flowers with his grandma. He was a very strong kid who earned the nickname Tuff. Layne had a great sense of humor, scaring and playing jokes on his family and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his parents, Chris and Jenni Hauger of Yankton; three siblings, Michala, Ty and Jessie Hauger all of Yankton; grandparents, Bruce and Donna Schwarz of Yankton; and several aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Leo and Anna Mae Hauger; uncle, Larry Hauger, cousin, Andy Lane, and friend Timmy Kuiper.

Messages will be reviewed and posted within 1 business day.

My sympathy to the family.

We are so so sorry for your loss. Layne was my son Weston's wrestling partner last year. I heard so much about him and how much he pushed Wes to improve, get stronger, but not give up. Weston has looked up to him and aspired to be a strong wrestler like Layne. Please know we are all hurting for you and thinking of you. May you find comfort in the coming days.

Heather & Bill Underwood, Weston & Coriss Schwartz

Layne was a friend of ours and we miss him very much. He always was the highlight of our day even if he was laughing at us. He always made us feel better when we were upset and was always a huge comfort. We love him so much. Amy won't be there for the funeral due to esd cross country. She wishes she could however. He will be greatly missed by us and the freshman class. We're so sorry for your loss.

I knew Layne for only a day. When Layne was in 7th grade, I was his sub for the day. He was gone from school the previous couple of days. He informed me that he was at the farm helping his dad out. He was so kind and polite as I helped him with his assignments. We spoke about life. I asked him about his plans for the future. He said that he wanted to go to the oil fields in North Dakota upon graduation. At the time, he said he wanted to be an electrician. The whole time we spent together, I kept thinking about his focus and drive. You could tell he was a strong and hard working young man. He made an impression on me in the short 50 minute class period. I'm glad we had the chance to visit. He was a delight to get to know. I'm so very sorry to hear of his passing. May Gods light shine during this difficult time.

Though we did not know Layne or his parents, we still pass on our sympathies for the entire family and for the grandparents, Donna & Bruce. Such an unexpected death for such a talented young man is not only a shock for the family but for his friends and others who knew him.

May God grant you healing mercies in your sorrow.
