Shirley Jean Harris, age 80, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Thursday, September 4, 2014 at Avera Yankton Care Center.
Memorial services are 2:00 PM, on Monday, September 8, 2014 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend Molly Carlson officiating. Inurnment will be at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton. The family will receive friends one hour prior the memorial service at the funeral home.
Urnbearers are her grandsons, Brian Jorgensen, Jason Kringen, and Sean Jorgensen.
Shirley was born April 22, 1934 near Gayville, South Dakota to Clarence and Clara (Olson) Snow. In 1940, she moved with her family to a farm near Yankton. Shirley attended rural schools and then Yankton High School. On June 10, 1950, she married Jim Harris at the Congregational Church in Vermillion, South Dakota. After their marriage, they lived in Nebraska for one year and then returned to South Dakota, residing in Mission Hill. In 1957, they moved to Yankton. Shirley provided day care for five years, then worked for the school lunch program at Yankton Middle School and finally, she worked 15 years at the Animal Health Clinic for Drs. Buckman, Lepp and Teachout. A good share of her life was spent doing what she loved most, being a homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother. Shirley enjoyed spending time with her grandsons and preparing their favorite foods. She also enjoyed working on family genealogy which included her Norwegian heritage. Jim and Shirley were members of the Lewis and Clark Campers for many years and enjoyed camping with many friends. Shirley was a member of the United Church of Christ, Yankton Senior Center, and Willowdale Country Club.
Her memory will be cherished by her two daughters: Delré (Garrett) Kringen of Gilbert, AZ and Debra Jorgensen (Bob Nolan) of Vermillion, SD; three grandsons: Jason (Rachael) Kringen of Sioux Falls, Brian Jorgensen of Sioux Falls and Sean Jorgensen of New York City, NY; and two great grandsons, Haydon and Riley Jorgensen of Sioux Falls.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Barbara Berg; and beloved husband, Jim Harris on July 20, 2005.
Memorials are preferred to Avera Sacred Heart Hospice in Yankton.
