Rodney Gene Hanson, age 54, of Yankton, South Dakota died Thursday, April 17, 2014 at the Golden Living Center in Salem, South Dakota.
Funeral services are 2:00 PM, on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend Dani Jo Ninke officiating. Burial will be at the Bethlehem Cemetery in rural Menno, South Dakota. Visitation is from 12:00 to 2:00 PM on Tuesday at the Wintz and Ray Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Ray Hanson Jr., Michael O'Connor, Andrew O'Connor, Vern Borgstrom, Robert Borgstrom, and Doug Hellmers.
Rodney was born January 16, 1960 in Yankton, South Dakota to Ray and Stella (Peterson) Hanson. He grew up in Gayville, South Dakota and graduated from Gayville High School in 1978. Rodney then received his degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. He also received a culinary diploma from Mitchell Technical Institute. He lived in the Tyndall and Yankton area and worked at the Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield, South Dakota as a drug and alcohol counselor. Rodney then worked for Sunshine Foods, Casey's General Store and Walmart, all in Yankton. On December 23, 2000, Rodney married Barbara Mae Lunn in Gayville. He enjoyed cooking, playing on the computer, and watching movies, cooking shows, baseball, Animal Planet, AMC and NASCAR. Rodney also enjoyed listening to music and being surrounded by his family and friends.
Rodney is survived by his wife, Barbara Hanson of Yankton; brother, Ray Jr. (Linda) Hanson of Huntsville, AL; two sisters, Grace (Kaleb) Boyd of Ogden, UT and Stephanie (Jerry) O'Connor of Omaha, NE; two aunts in California; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Rodney was preceded in death by his parents and several aunts and uncles.
