Rodney Walter Hansen, age 84 of Coleridge, Nebraska, died on Friday, August 28, 2015 at the Park View Haven Nursing Home in Coleridge.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Coleridge, Nebraska with Reverend Debra Valentine officiating. Burial will be in the Lawn Ridge Cemetery in Coleridge with military honors provided by the Coleridge American Legion Post #114. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday, August 31, 2015 at Immanuel Lutheran Church with a prayer service at 7:00 PM.
Pallbearers are Robert Kalin, Jeff Wolfe, Mike Heithold, Richard Kalin, Terry Burbach, and Gary Graham. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
Rodney Walter Hansen was born April 8, 1931 on the family farm in Wayne County, Nebraska to Walter and Ruth (Andersen) Hansen. Rodney was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. At an early age the family moved to Allen, Nebraska where he attended grade school. After his father's death, Rodney stopped attending high school to help with the farm. He married Helen Kastrup on June 23, 1952 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Laurel, Nebraska. He was drafted into the United States Army and was stationed in England from 1953 until 1955. Following his discharge, he returned to Coleridge and worked as a farm hand for one year. He then began farming on his own in the Coleridge area and continued for many years.
In his youth he was a member of the 4-H and later served as a 4-H leader. He served on the United Lutheran Church board in Laurel, the AMPI board and Coleridge School Board. Helen and Rodney volunteered at the Embers and Park View Haven in Coleridge for many years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Coleridge American Legion Post #114. Rodney was a hardworking man who loved farming and raising cattle. He enjoyed playing cards and visiting with friends, but he especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Helen Hansen of Coleridge; daughter, Rebecca (Dallas) Graham of Belden, Nebraska; five grandchildren: Joshua (Amy) Graham of Randolph, Nebraska; Jeff (Robyn) Graham on Leigh, Nebraska; Jonathan (Melissa) Graham of Laurel, Nebraska; Amanda (Brent) Cakebread of Norfolk, Nebraska; and Matthew Graham of Lincoln, Nebraska; seven great grandchildren: Maddy, Reagan, Brayden, Dylan, Garrett, Stella, and Sawyer; brother, Kenneth Hansen of Allen, Nebraska; three sisters: Arlene Patefield of Laurel; Bernita Meyer of Wisner, Nebraska; and Vivian Lemke of Merrill, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Hansen of Del Rapids, South Dakota and Joyce Goldston of Fremont, Nebraska; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons Anthony in infancy, Walter and Alan; father and mother-in-law, Svend and Herta Marie Kastrup; brother, Maynard Hansen; five brothers-in-law, Milo Patefield, Leland Lemke; Dick Houfek, Kenneth (Alice) Kastrup, and James Goldston; four sisters-in-law, Mary Hansen, Alice Irene (Gordon) Starks, Ida (La Verne) James and Betty Lou Kastrup.
