Clifford Francis Gubbels, 65, died Saturday, October 18, 2014 at his home near Bow Valley, after his battle with cancer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at 10:30 am at the Holy Family (Sts. Peter and Paul) Catholic Church in Bow Valley with Rev. Eric Olsen officiating. Burial will be in the Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Bow Valley. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a Vigil Service at 7:00 pm at the church and will continue one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church. Military honors will be provided by the Hartington VFW Post 5283. The Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington is in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers will be Mike Gubbels, Mark Gubbels, Chris Gubbels, Nick Kort, David Lanning, Jeff Birger and Cory Foxhoven.
Cliff was born on November 21, 1948 in Hartington, Nebraska to Francis Anthony and Theresa Alma (Leise) Gubbels. Cliff grew up in the Hartington area and attended grade school at Spring Valley District 32 and Cedar Catholic High School. As a young man, Cliff enjoyed farming, hunting, and playing catcher for local baseball teams. After graduating in 1967, Cliff enlisted in the US Marine Corps and proudly served his country in the Viet Nam War. After being discharged from the Marine Corps, Cliff returned home to farm with his Dad. On August 1, 1970 Cliff married Linda Lanning in Yankton, SD. Together they farmed north of Hartington until 1986. Cliff then worked at Pinkleman Sales where he became a skilled welder, which was a useful trade when he later worked for area farmers.
Cliff and Linda were members of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Bow Valley, where they served as EMEs. Together they raised five children and a wide variety of animals. On September 25, 1998, Cliff's wife, Linda, died suddenly, at the age of 49. Cliff liked to garden and build things in his shop such as; bird houses, livestock panels, and even metal lawn art. Cliff also had a passion for getting bargains at auctions or rummage sales. Cliff's greatest joy was driving his tractors and caring for his animals. On October 18, 2013, Cliff married his longtime companion Betty Hoile in Hartington, Nebraska.
Cliff is survived by his wife, Betty Hoile of Hartington, 5 children and their spouses; James and Marshawn Gubbels of Winside, NE; John and Christy Gubbels of Norfolk, NE; Jerald and Amy Gubbels of Stuart, NE; Joe and Maggie Gubbels of Wayne NE; Julie Anderson of Winside, NE; 14 grandchildren, two sisters Diane Ryan of Gillette WY, Patty and Dave Elam of Papillion, NE; a brother, Francis Jr and Janelle Gubbels of Hartington; 3 step children Robert and Michelle Hoile of Des Moines, IA; Jennifer and Jason Judt of Norfolk, NE; Stacie Denisov of Omaha, NE and 3 step grandchildren.
Cliff was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Linda.
