Joyce was born on July 25, 1931, in Utica, SD, to Jens August and Marie Wilhemina Clara (Lau) List. She spent her younger years in Utica and moved with her family to Yankton in 1941, where she attended the Yankton Schools. She married Floyd Gross on July 14, 1952, in Yankton, where they resided, and she made a career as a switchboard operator, first with Bell Telephone and then at Sacred Heart Hospital. She retired from SHH in 1993, where she was fondly known as the "Voice of Sacred Heart." Her retirement years were focused around family, mainly her grandchildren, where she rarely missed any of their activities or events. At 70 years old, Joyce was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. She resided in several care facilities the past ten years, the last being over seven years at Sanford Vermillion Care Center.
Joyce was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Ernest-Bowyer Auxiliary Post 791, both in Yankton. She kept active in her children's lives being a room mother, a Sunday school teacher and a Girl Scout leader. She was a faithful follower of all of her children. She was also a huge Nebraska Cornhusker football fan and immensely enjoyed both watching and listening to the games on TV and the radio at the same time, as well as all pre and postgame programs.
Joyce is survived by her 5 children: Deanna (Tim) Garvey of Yankton, Steve (Anita) Gross of Yankton, Randy (Mary) Gross of Yankton, Julie (Steve) Bloch of Lesterville, SD, and Sheri (Jeffery) Jenkins of Ozark, MO; 12 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren and 2 on the way, and a brother, Don (Marlys) List of Yankton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: Larry Gene, Jens, and Everett List; a sister, Mae Adeline List; 2 grandchildren, Kellen Gross and Seth Bloch; and most recently her husband, Floyd, who died on October 8, 2014.
