Dean A. Gilbertson, age 59, of Volin, South Dakota, died Saturday, May 14, 2016 at his home in Volin.

A memorial service will be 2:00 PM on Monday, May 23, 2016, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton, South Dakota with Reverend Velma Larson officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Volin, South Dakota. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service at the funeral home on Monday.

Dean A. Gilbertson was born April 27, 1957, in Yankton, South Dakota, to Kenneth and Mildred (Smith) Gilbertson. He grew up on the farm near Volin, South Dakota and graduated from Gayville-Volin High School. He attended Mitchell Technical Institute in Mitchell, South Dakota, where he learned to become an electrician. He worked for a few years in Norfolk, Nebraska and then began working for nuclear power plants in Kansas and later North Carolina. He moved back to the family farm near Volin in the early 90's and began working for area farmers.

Dean loved woodworking, especially working with a scroll saw. He made many decorations, including a plaque of the Lord's Prayer that hangs in Faith United Lutheran Church in Volin. He also enjoyed playing cards and reading.

Survivors include his mother, Mildred Gilbertson of Yankton; brother, Don (Carol) Gilbertson of Pierce, Nebraska; sister, Betty (Doug) Nicoll of Omaha, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Diane Gilbertson of Pierce; and four nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth and his brother, Bill.

Sorry to hear of Dean's untimely passing. We spent a lot of time together stacking hay and hanging out when we were teenagers. Condolences to the family.
