Jon Keith Gartner, age 77 of Crofton, Nebraska died on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at the Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton, SD.
Funeral services will be on Monday, January 18, 2016 at 10:30 am at the Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton with Rev. Gary Kimm officiating. Burial will be in the Crofton City Cemetery with military services provided by the Crofton American Legion Post 128 and the Legion Riders. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm with a Prayer Service at 3:30 pm at the funeral home. Visitation will begin on Monday at 9:30 am.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Marlon Smith, Al Munsch, Tom Hillman, Dennis Engstedt, Nick Woockman, Justin Hillman and Jeff Schieffer.
Active Pallbearers will be T.J. Diefenderfer, Tim Allen, Tom Allen, Brian Wiebelhaus, Eugene Hillman and Ted Hillman.
Jon was born on July 17, 1938 at Coleridge, Nebraska to Edward F and Eva N (Holsworth) Gartner. He grew up in Randolph, Nebraska and graduated from Randolph High School in 1956. Jon joined the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Great Sitkin until his discharge in 1959. He married Carolynn Hillman on August 1, 1959 at Crofton. They made their home in Norfolk, Nebraska until moving to Crofton in 1961 where Jon worked for Elred Lange as an electrician and then for N & B Gas Company. They lived in Chamberlain, SD from 1969 to 1970 where he worked for the U.S. Corp of Engineers as an electrician at Big Bend Dam. He then moved back to Crofton and continued working for the Corp of Engineers at Gavins Point Dam eventually becoming Power Plant Maintenance Superintendent. He retired in 1998 and then worked with Al Munsch in Yankton as a draftsman until 2008.
Jon loved all sports especially basketball and football. He was a former announcer for the local baseball games and ran the chain gang for the Crofton High School football team for many years. He was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker football fan and enjoyed fishing.
Jon is survived by his wife, Carolynn of Crofton, 4 children, Richard Gartner of Yankton; Colin (Denise) Gartner of Wellington, Colorado; Kay (Tracy) Campbell of Madrid, Iowa; Craig (Jamie) Gartner of Yankton; 14 grandchildren, Tiffany, Alexis, Allyson, Kaitlyn, Cynthia and Sierra Gartner, Christine Mitchell, Matthew Haberman, Kyle, Anthony and Trevor Gartner, Zoey Auch, Madelynn Gartner and Kylie Auch, a brother, Delmar (Pat) Gartner of Port Lucie, Florida and nephew, Tony (Cess) and daughter Ali of Austin, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Darlene.

I worked with Jon for 12 years at the Gavin's Point power plant . He was very knowledgable and a good man to work with. He was my supervisor up until his retirement. RIP Jon.

We were sorry to hear of Jon's passing. Jon was a professional, team player, and friend, whom I enjoyed working with at Gavin's Point Dam. He was a mentor to many who crossed his path, both in his work and his personal life. He loved his family and friends and will be missed. God took his hand and led him Home. Rest well, Jon.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I wanted to attend so badly and I'm sorry I couldn't. As I think back on the memories and the fun times we had as our families would get together, especially in Chamberlain, SD....I treasure them to this day. Jon will never be forgotten.
