Vernon Riner Dickes age 78 of Hartington, Nebraska died on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at the Golden Living Center in Hartington, NE.
Funeral Services will be on Monday January 12, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hartington with the Rev. Amanda Jertson officiating. Burial will be at the Hartington City Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Hartington VFW Post #5283. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-5:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. Visitation will continue on Monday at church one hour prior to services.
Pallbearers will be Anthony Thoene, Jim Meyer, Bob Vandermark, Mark Carlson, Randy Evans, and Gary Dickes.
Vernon Riner was born at home on December 21, 1936 in Hartington to Riner and Mildred (Wilcox) Dickes. He attended Hartington Public School. Vernon worked construction until 1955. He then enlisted in the Army and had his basic training in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Vernon served in Korea for 16 months until he was discharged in 1957. From 1958 until 1963 he worked as a lineman installing dial systems. Vernon then worked for 23 years for the Operating Engineer Union (based out of Colorado) as a heavy equipment operator installing cross-country pipelines in nine states. After retiring in 1993 he moved from Loveland, Colorado to Hartington where he remodeled and lived in his parent's home until entering the Golden Living Center in October of 2014.
Vernon was a member of the Hartington VFW Post #5283. He liked fishing and going to the Casino.
He is survived by his nephew Doug Heitman and Vicky Roberts of Hartington; niece Dianne and husband Tim Stewart of Morgantown, WV; a great niece and nephew Anthony and Ashley Stewart of Morgantown, WV.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law Doris and John Heitman; sister Helen (Dickes) Bursell and her husband Wilbur Bursell, siblings Mary Ann, Marion, Junior, Mae, Doris Elaine, and infant sister Frances Rose Dickes
