Vlasta Christensen, age 89, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Sunday, August 10, 2014, at Avera Yankton Care Center, in Yankton.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at Calvary Baptist Church in Yankton with Reverend Rick Slattery officiating. Burial will be in the Volin Cemetery in Volin, South Dakota. Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a prayer service at 6:30 PM. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the funeral on Thursday at the church.
Pallbearers are Jerry Kleinschmit, James Christensen, Douglas Roy Kleinschmit, Adam Gall, Tom Teply, Dylan Steffen, and Mason Steffen. Honorary pallbearers are Crystal Christensen, Christian Gall, Brooklynn Gall, Carter Teply, Douglas Roy Kleinschmit Jr., Lucas Kleinschmit, and Erik Kleinschmit.
Vlasta was born May 6, 1925, in Hartington, Nebraska to James and Marie (Konupek) Svarc. She grew up on the farm near Hartington and graduated from Liberty High School in 1947, in Pleasant Valley, Nebraska. She married Roy Christensen on April 25, 1947 in Hartington. They moved to Yankton where Vlasta worked for the Human Service Center for a short time. Her main focus was on raising her family.
She kept busy volunteering at The Center in Yankton and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the VFW Auxiliary in Yankton. She loved visiting with people, reading, cooking, gardening, and was a wonderful hostess. She loved life and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her two children: Sharon (Jerry) Kleinschmit of Yankton and Leonard (Kathy) Christensen of Yankton; six grandchildren: Douglas Roy (Lori) Kleinschmit, Sheila Steffen, Sherri (Adam) Gall, Geraldine (Tom) Teply, James Roy Christensen, and Crystal Christensen; eight great grandchildren; sister, Olga (Dallas) Jorgensen of Yankton; brother, Lumir (Del Rae) Svarc of Volcano, California; sister-in-law, Kathy Svarc of Kirkland, Washington; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Roy; and brother Stanley Svarc.

I remember Vlasta walking to my grandparents house to visit (Harry
and Ruby Hansen). They enjoyed her company. My mother was Roy's cousin
(Betty Klasi). My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
