Jerry "J.B." Byrkeland, age 66, of Yankton, South Dakota, died unexpectedly Monday, June 15, 2015, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Friday, June 19, 2015, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Yankton with Reverend Ken Lulf officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, June 18, 2015, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a vigil service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the Mass on Friday at the church.

Pallbearers are Tom Slowey, Dave Haas, Keith Williams, Cliff Williams, Daryl Wayne Barry, Wade Barry, Rod Barry, and Larry Schulte.

Jerry Byrkeland was born August 1, 1948, in Yankton, South Dakota, to Erling and Melba (Tschetter) Byrkeland. He grew up in Gayville, South Dakota for a few years until later moving to Yankton. He graduated from Yankton High School in 1966. He attended Yankton College until transferring to Southern State College in Springfield, South Dakota. He married Janice Schulte on June 26, 1968, in Yankton. After their marriage they lived in Yankton where Jerry worked for Kapitan's Grocery Store and later for Phillips 66 in Yankton. He worked as dock foreman for Abler Transfer until starting J B Auto Body, which he owned and operated for over 30 years.

Jerry was very active and was a member of Whitetails Unlimited and many 4-wheel drive clubs. He sponsored many outdoor associations, softball and bowling teams. He enjoyed playing softball, bowling, hunting, working in his yard, watching Twins games and Nascar. He loved his family and his German shorthair dogs. He will always be remembered for his friendliness and generosity. He helped anyone in need and never expected anything in return.

Survivors include his wife, Jan Byrkeland of Yankton; five children: Scott (Nicki) Byrkeland of Lesterville, South Dakota; Jim (Kim) Byrkeland; Bob Byrkeland; Mike (Karen) Byrkeland; Shelly (Nate) Heiden all of Yankton; 10 grandchildren: Gage, Evan, Carson, Kaden, Allie, Emma, Marissa, Brayden, Piper, and Harper; brother, John (Beth) Byrkeland of Algona, Iowa; four sisters: Heather (Rick Smith) Hansen of Owasso, Oklahoma; Mary Beth (Gerald) Gergen of Dallas, South Dakota; Madonna Byrkeland of Richmond, Virginia; and Becky Frank of Lesterville. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
