Verena E. Bruening, age 81 of Hartington, Nebraska died on Sunday, January 11, 2015 at the Providence Medical Center in Wayne, NE
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with the Rev. Jeffery Loseke officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael's Cemetery in Hartington. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4-8:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 6:30 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. Visitation will continue on Thursday at church one hour prior to services.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Chris Bruening, Scott Bruening, Eric Bruening, Joe Meier, Seth Meier, and Alec Bruening. Honorary pallbearers will be Verena's granddaughters Karen Bruening, Katie Marshall, Sarah Bierman, Rochelle Wolverton, Samantha Bruening, and Blaire Bruening.
Verena Elizabeth Bruening was born on a farm southwest of Wynot, NE on August 6, 1933 to William A. and Clara (Ahlers) Eskens. When she was about 7 years old her family moved to a farm by St. James. She was baptized at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wynot and went to school at St. James. She made her First Communion and was confirmed at Sts Philip and James Catholic Church. After she graduated from Wynot High School she worked in Sioux City, Iowa until her marriage to Ralph H. Bruening on June 2, 1954 in St. James, NE. Verena worked for many years as the secretary for Don Miller Land Company in Hartington. Ralph died on June 30, 2004 at the age of 71 years. Verena then began working for Dollar General until she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and its Guild, and also the Christian Mothers.
Verena is survived by her four children and spouses, Bill Bruening of Hartington, Lori and Rod Meier of Norfolk, Kevin and Tad Bruening of Norfolk, Darin and Kristie Bruening of Norfolk; 12 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; one brother William Eskens Jr. of Jefferson City, MO; one sister Rita and husband Marvin Wieseler of Wynot; brothers-in-law Paul Schurman of Randolph, and Jerry Meyer of Hartington; sister-in-law Marlene Eskens Starman of Coleridge.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ralph in 2004; sisters Alice Meyer and Mary Ann Schurman; brother Arnold Eskens; and sister-in-law Patricia Eskens.
