Maves Ruth Benson was born January 20, 1921 to Earl and Bertha (Berge) Cross on the family farm in the Addison community, west of Crofton, Nebraska and died at her Good Samaritan home in Bloomfield, Nebraska on Sunday, September 7, 2014 in the company of her family. She was 93.
A Memorial service will be on Friday, September 12, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton, Nebraska with the Rev. Amanda Jertson officiating. Burial of the urn will be at the Crofton City Cemetery. There will be an hour of visitation at the funeral home prior to services.
Maves attended Addison country school for eight years and graduated from Crofton High School in 1938. She attended Wayne State Teacher's College for two years, then taught first grade at Sloan, Iowa for two years. She went back to Wayne State Teacher's College for a year and then taught English and Drama for one year at Allen High School in Allen, Nebraska.
Maves married Don E. Benson of Wausa on June 19, 1946. They lived for a time in Ames, IA where Don attended Iowa State before moving to Topeka, Kansas where Don worked for Goodyear and Maves worked for Hallmark Cards. In the spring of 1948 Don, Maves and daughter Ann moved to the Addison farm, living there for five years before moving to the farm north of Lindy. Son Kyle was born in 1962.
Maves enjoyed the life of the farm wife - working with her husband in the general farm practices, including gardening and raising Hereford cattle. She also enjoyed writing and receiving letters. She could be found at the typewriter early in the morning typing out her thoughts to whomever was owed a letter.
Survivors include her daughter, Ann Benson (Dean Suing) of Omaha; brother Del Cross (Mayme) of Bloomfield; brother-in-law Vernon Benson of Manhattan Beach, CA and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Dale Cross (1942), her parents, Earl (1970) and Bertha (1975), her husband Don (2002) and son Kyle (2014).
