Arthella Marie "Tilly" Arens, age 79 of Hartington, NE died on Monday, February 06, 2017 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Family (Sacred Heart) Catholic Church in Wynot with the Rev. Eric Olson officiating. Burial of her cremated remains will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Wynot. Visitation will be on Friday, at church, from 5-7:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Saturday one hour prior to services at church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington.

Arthella Marie Arens was born on July 30, 1937 in Guthrie Center, Iowa to Harmon and Agnes (Christensen) Ohm. She grew up in Iowa and graduated from Bayard High School. While in school, Tilly liked to rollerskate and play basketball. After high school, Tilly went to Omaha and worked for several doctors as a receptionist. She met Arlo Peter Arens and they were married on April 27, 1957 in Bayard, Iowa. They farmed on the Arens home farm southeast of Wynot. She and Arlo raised three children, Austin, Alan and Angela. Tilly worked as the Future Promise Center's Coordinator for over 20 years where she worked with many children. Later Tilly served as a Cedar County Commissioner for two terms.

Tilly was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church. She loved playing cards and bowling.

Tilly is survived by her daughter, Angela Arens of Hartington; two grandchildren Michael & Brandi Arens of Grand Island, NE; seven great grandchildren; sister Karen Applewhite.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Arlo on July 20, 2013 at the age of 73 years; two sons Austin and Alan Arens.

How sad to lose such a dedicated friend and mentor. But knowing her happiness when she was met at heaven's door by husband, sons, parents, and the many, many friends who were fortunate enough to have known her....our sadness turns into smiles.
