Dorothy J. Anderson, age 86, of Yankton, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton.
Funeral services are 11:00 AM, on Friday, November 4, 2016 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Yankton with Reverend David Gunderson officiating. Burial will be in the Gayville Cemetery in Gayville, South Dakota. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, on Thursday, November 3 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a prayer service at 7:00 PM led by Reverend Steve Weispfennig. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
Pallbearers are her grandsons: Leray Anderson II, Jeff Anderson, Dustin Anderson, Josh Anderson, Matt Anderson and Jared Schmadeke. Honorary pallbearers are her granddaughters: Jennifer Novak, Tracy Sahs, Aliscia Poore, Sara Jares, Tara Topete, Katie Christensen, Paige McKee and Cassidy Graham.
Dorothy was born October 18, 1930 in Yankton, South Dakota to Christian and Alta (Hackett) Christensen. She grew up in Yankton where she attended school. Dorothy married Elwood Hudson in 1947. They lived in Kansas for three years and had two children, Chris and Michael. They were divorced and Dorothy married Ray Anderson on May 25, 1952. To this union, five children were born: Leray, Dean, Vertus, Charlene and Cynthia. After their marriage, they farmed north of Yankton until 1963 and then moved into town in February of 1969. Dorothy worked at Wallbaum Drug Store, Newberry's Five and Dime, GG Shop, M-Tron Industries for 19 years and finally at Casey General Store where she made donuts for over 15 years. Dorothy loved baking, cooking, and decorating cakes and cookies. She was a very talented seamstress and enjoyed sewing and making afghans. Above all, Dorothy loved her family and her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the most important part of her life.
Dorothy is survived by five sons: Chris (Bonnie) Hudson of Yankton, Michael Hudson of Gayville, Leray (Jeanne) Anderson of Alexandria, SD, Dean (Cheryl) Anderson of Yankton and Vertus (Carol) Anderson of Yankton; two daughters: Charlene Schmadeke of Crofton, NE and Cynthia (Michael) Graham of Alexandria, SD; 14 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one sister, Ethel Goeden of Yankton; and one sister-in-law, Dolores Christensen of Garden Grove, CA; and many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray Anderson on March 31, 1993; son-in-law, David Schmadeke; daughter-in-law, Julie Hudson; three brothers: Johnnie, Clarence and Tommy Christensen; and two sisters, Myrtle Christensen and Laura Goeden.
